Daily Current Affairs 8 July 2026: The Hindu Notes for UPSC – One Nation One Election, India-Indonesia Ties, Mission Drishti & More

Welcome to iN SHORT Daily Current Affairs (8 July 2026) from SUPER SIMPLIFIED – concise, exam-ready The Hindu Notes for UPSC Prelims and Mains 2026. Today's edition covers the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act vs personal law, the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill on One Nation, One Election, India-Indonesia strategic ties, the new Index of Services Production, life insurers and sovereign debt, and Mission Drishti's OptoSAR satellite. Read, revise, and retain.

1. Secular Dominance of PCMA, 2006 Over Personal Law

The Allahabad High Court held that the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA), 2006 is a secular statute that applies uniformly to all citizens irrespective of religion. The Court ruled that Muslim personal law — which recognises puberty as the marriageable age — cannot override the statutory provisions of the PCMA, 2006, nor dilute the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, which criminalises sexual relations with any child below 18 years.

2. The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 – One Nation, One Election

Currently under review by a Parliamentary Joint Committee, the Bill aims to introduce simultaneous elections (One Nation, One Election) in India. A critical provision under consideration is a statutory bar on introducing a no-confidence motion against an incumbent government if less than one year of its term remains — a safeguard designed to preserve stability within a synchronised electoral cycle.

3. India-Indonesia Strategic Act East Milestones

India and Indonesia deepened their Act East partnership across several fronts. Indonesia conferred its highest civilian honour, the 'Bintang Adipurna', on Prime Minister Narendra Modi — making him only the second Indian PM to receive it after Jawaharlal Nehru (1995). On defence, agreements were reached for India to deliver the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and Astra Mk-1 beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missiles to the Indonesian Armed Forces. Indonesia welcomed India's interest in the integrated development of the strategic Sabang Port (maritime industries and offshore energy in the Andaman Sea), and the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) will set up its first overseas campus at the Singhasari SEZ in Malang, Indonesia.

4. Index of Services Production (ISP)

Set to be released on 29 July, the Index of Services Production (ISP) is India's first systematic attempt to periodically quantify the formal services sector. It will rely heavily on Goods and Services Tax (GST) data as its primary source; where GST data is absent, it will combine administrative records with the Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE).

5. Life Insurance as a Macroeconomic Pillar of Sovereign Debt

Indian life insurers collectively hold nearly a quarter (25%) of India's outstanding central government dated securities (G-Secs), acting as the primary source of long-term “patient capital” for public infrastructure. The state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is the single largest institutional holder of Indian government debt, holding roughly 19% of all outstanding central G-Secs — amounting to about ₹20.2 lakh crore.

6. Mission Drishti & OptoSAR Satellites

Mission Drishti, developed by Indian start-up GalaxEye, is the world's first OptoSAR satellite — integrating both electro-optical (EO) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors onto a single Earth-observation platform, enabling all-weather, day-and-night imaging.

Why These Topics Matter for UPSC

These stories map directly onto the UPSC syllabus. The PCMA vs personal law ruling and the 129th Amendment Bill are core GS Paper II (Polity & Governance) material on statutes, fundamental rights, and electoral reform. The India-Indonesia milestones feed GS Paper II (International Relations) and Prelims on bilateral agreements and defence platforms like BrahMos and Astra Mk-1. The Index of Services Production and life insurers' role in sovereign debt are prime GS Paper III (Economy) topics on data systems, GST, and public finance. Mission Drishti's OptoSAR technology is high-value GS Paper III (Science & Technology) and a likely Prelims factual. For Prelims, note the specific figures and firsts; for Mains, use them as analytical examples.
